Oram Po turns 20: Vikram Vedha director duo Pushkar-Gayathri discuss their debut

Director duo Pushkar and Gayathri gained widespread recognition with the success of Vikram Vedha (2017), featuring R. Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi. The film not only brought them into the mainstream but also led them to Bollywood, where they remade it with Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan in the lead roles. However, their journey in the film industry spans over a decade, and their initial works, Oram Po and Va Quarter Cutting, have attained a cult following.

Celebrating the 15th anniversary of Oram Po, a film that brought a quirky and novel flavor to Tamil cinema, the directors took to Twitter to share the trailer and reminisced about the movie’s impact. They expressed gratitude to the film crew, especially mentioning director Halitha Shameem, known for the acclaimed film Sillu Karuppatti. Halitha, in response, acknowledged the significant role of Pushkar and Gayathri in her career, stating that working with them made her journey a smooth ride.

Oram Po revolves around two auto drivers, Chandru (Arya) and Bigil (Lal), who engage in auto races. The plot unfolds as the head of a rival gang attempts to sabotage their success, leading to an internal conflict between the friends and their eventual downfall.

Although not a mainstream hit, Oram Po quickly attracted a niche audience looking for unconventional Tamil cinema. Beyond its storyline, the film stood out for its distinctive aesthetics. Pushkar and Gayathri ventured into world-building much before it became a trend, as seen in their 2010 film Va Quarter Cutting, featuring a cameo by Chandru from Oram Po. These idiosyncrasies have earned Oram Po a dedicated fan base over the years, and the film is currently available for streaming on Sun Nxt.
